sounds like you have a back boiler and a cylinder up in the airing cupboard the stat in the hall way is for controlling the heating with the timer is on. the hissing sound from the fire/boiler, needs a service and should be carried out by a corgi eng and this not a 10min job back boilers can take up to 50 Min's to service
