Where do scientist think asteroids originated ?

The solar system began as a big swirling cloud of dust and gas. The stuff in the middle became compressed and eventually became the sun. Further out everything began to clump together from gravity, forming small rocks that eventually collected together into larger and larger rocks, and finally planets. Asteroids are rocks that weren't able to clump together with each other or other planets, most likely due to the influence of Jupiter's gravity.
